Nautical Stripes

The original French Sailor Chic

Known by many names, sailor’s shirt, French Navy shirt, Breton, or simply stripes shirt, it’s a piece of effortless chic that has found it’s way it’s into stylish closets for decades, from Coco Chanel who,  during the first world war, regularly took seaside holidays, wearing the iconic top , to the most talented and elegant designers.

In the 1940s, marinières were worn by Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, James Dean and the mime Marcel Marceau to name but a few.

In the 1960's, Yves Saint Laurent introduced it into his premier collections, causing a big fashion wage in haute couture, Jackie O and Marlon Brando loved it too.

More recently, Jean Paul Gaultier has been in love with the marinière ever since the 1980s, in all its forms, styles and the most diverse materials.
